Berrettini continues to make steady strides in Stuttgart on Shelton’s bye day

Date:

The Italian Matteo Berrettini expanded his expectations at the Stuttgart tennis tournament, which he won twice, by defeating the Canadian Denis Shapovalov and put himself in the quarterfinals where he will face Australian James Duckworth, executioner of the event’s second favorite, American Ben Shelton.

Berrettini, an expert on grass, who won in Stuttgart in 2022 and 2019, wants to take advantage of this stretch of the course, on his preferred surface, to establish himself on the circuit. The Roman tennis player, who won this year’s Marrakech on clay, his eighth trophy, beat Shapovalov in doubles 6-4, in 76 minutes.

The Italian, who has so far failed to beat the Canadian he has met twice, will face Australian James Duckworth in the quarterfinals, who sprung a surprise in the session by knocking out the second seed, Shelton, on the outside of the event.

Duckworth, 101 in the ATP ranking, won 7-6(5), 4-6 and 6-3 against the North American, in two hours and six minutes of play. The American, ranked fourteenth in the world, has already lost on the ocean, in Adelaide in 2022, the only time they have met.

On the other side of the draw, American Brandon Nakashima left French veteran Richard Gasquet out of the tournament which he won 6-3 and 6-4. He will play in the quarterfinals with German Jan Lennard Struff, seventh seed, who defeated Frenchman Arthur Rinderknech in two sets (6-4 and 7-6(0)).
