Alonso and Alpine, optimistic in Baku

Date:

Fernando Alonso finished in fourth position in Free Practice 2 of F1 Azerbaijan GP yesterday and fifth in the previous session, in Free Practice 1, which sets the highest speed and the record in the third sector. “Now we seem to be fast,” he pointed out Fernando Alonso after getting out of his car this Friday, optimistic and hoping that the team’s work on Friday night will bear fruit for “making sure we maintain this kind of speed this Saturday”.

“We’re quick to look at straight ones and sometimes it’s a setup compromise on this type of circuit, but let’s see how we do it this Saturday.” Fernando Alonso added.

Logic says Red Bull and Ferrari should be clearly ahead. And that Mercedes must be the third best car. But Alpine is fast at the start and Mercedes could slow down straight through its higher rebound. Alpine is supposed to be resistant to AlphaTauri, but its true strength in qualification remains to be seen. For now, Alpine’s higher speed on the straight could indicate that their rivals still need to turn the tap on their machines. Or maybe it was a sign of hope for the French. Nonetheless, Alpine ended the day on a positive note as the new parts (some new pontoon and some floor elements) worked right away.

“We are happy with our work today. We brought some updates to Baku and everything seems to be working well, “said Alpine sporting director Alain Permane.” Drivers are reasonably happy with the cars and of course there are still improvements to be made. ”

“Both sessions went according to plan with no issues. We did our work on the wheel and we have a good understanding of how the car works, both high and low fuel. The wind plays a role. “It’s an important role here, it can be very hectic. It’s been a solid day and we look forward to qualifying this Saturday,” Permane added.

“It is always difficult here in Baku with the fast and windy circuit conditions. But I think we had a normal Friday and tested some of our new items. We still need to optimize a few things in the vehicle set-up before qualifying, Fernando also said.
