Xavi Pascual will continue training in Russia next season after reaching a renewal agreement with Zenit Saint Petersburg, a team he has led since 2020. The 51-year-old Gavà coach has extended his commitment for a year and less than 2 million. euros net, which would allow him to become one of the best paid coaches in Europe.
Pascual, who is at the end of his contract, is Juan Carlos Navarro’s main candidate to replace Roger Grimau at the head of Barça’s first basketball team. The coach, who was in that position between 2008 and 2016, agreed to significantly reduce his salary to return to Palau, but in the end the theses of manager Josep Cubells prevailed, who preferred to choose a coach with a lower profile and more affordable, after which Joan Peñarroya was signed. At Zenit Pascual earns around 2 million euros net annually.
Anadolu Efes was close to reaching an agreement with Pascual a few months ago but finally decided to renew the Serbian Tomislav Mijatovic. Later, the failed attempt at Barça and little movement on the Euroleague benches after this season led Pascual to decide to stay in Russia for another year while waiting to return to a Euroleague bench later.
