trouble with America Cup with the Uruguayan team. This week, there was controversy with the player Rodrigo Bentancurfrom Tottenham, who dedicated a few words to his Korean teammate Son of Heung Min which did not sit well and for which he had to apologize. His words created a stir on social networks. Now, it has been the English club that has issued a clarification on its social networks.
The trouble arose as a result of an interview with the famous Uruguayan journalist, Rafa Cotelo, in which he asked for a T-shirt Son of Heung Min, captain of the London team. “Can you get me a Korean shirt? Or a champion?” Bentancur’s answer was as follows: “Or Sonny’s cousin, in short, they are almost all the same.”
It was a joke that the player wanted to make but that offended the Asian community. Several Twitter users from Korea spread the video and classified the midfielder as racist. Bentancur himself had to apologize on his Instagram account: “Sony brother! I apologize to you for what happened, it was a very bad joke. You know how much I love you and I will never disrespect you or hurt you or anyone. “I love you brother!” he wrote in a message.
For its part, Tottenham wrote this clarifying message on their social networks: “After a comment from Rodrigo Bentancur With a video clip of an interview and the player’s subsequent public apology, the Club is helping to ensure a positive outcome to the matter. This includes higher education for all stakeholders in line with our diversity, equity and inclusion goals. We fully support that our captain Sonny feels that he can put an end to the incident and the team can focus on the new season ahead. We are extremely proud of our diverse global fan base and our gaming teams. “Discrimination of any kind has no place at our Club, within our game or in society in general.”
