On Thursday morning, residents of Vienna-Währing were surprised when they suddenly saw flames erupting from a parked car after a loud bang. A resident of the home recorded the fire brigade’s extinguishing operation with videos and photos.
The dangerous scenes took place around 10:15 am at the intersection of Währinger Straße and Hans-Sachs-Gasse. After a loud bang, the engine compartment started to smoke. A little later the first flashes of flame were visible.
Emergency services quickly on site
The startled occupants immediately escaped from the car and alerted the emergency services. Minutes later, police and fire brigades arrived on the scene to extinguish the fire and cordon off the surrounding streets. The operation ended around 10:40 am.
“I was afraid the vehicle would explode.”
A neighbor observed the morning operation: “At first I thought the house was on fire. Then I saw the burning car outside. Fortunately, the fire brigade arrived quickly; from above it looked quite dangerous. The smoke got louder and I was afraid the vehicle was going to explode.”
It is still unclear why the car suddenly started to burn.
