Sleeping problems, etc. – More than one in two people suffer from heat

Date:

More than every second person surveyed in Austria feels affected by temperatures above 30 degrees Celsius. Women and people under the age of 30 are particularly affected, as a survey by Allianz among 1,000 people has now shown.

The most common complaints include reduced performance (43 percent), heavy sweating (41 percent), sleep problems (33 percent) and reduced work performance (31 percent). Circulatory problems, weakness and exhaustion, headaches and severe fatigue were also repeatedly mentioned. In addition, respondents reported psychological effects such as depressive moods, including young people between the ages of 20 and 29. It is also this age group that complains most about high temperatures.

“Climate change is increasingly bringing us into contact with heat waves and other extreme weather events. The high temperatures place an extraordinary burden on the human body (…),” said Dragan Dokic, responsible for health at Allianz Austria. Infants, small children, the elderly and people with chronic diseases are at particular risk.

How Austrians protect themselves
According to the survey, to protect themselves from the heat, Austrians make sure they drink enough (79 percent), darken the windows (57 percent) and stay in the shade or in cool indoor spaces (55 percent). The majority ventilate at cooler times and wear lighter clothing. Many people also avoid heavy or fatty foods and move physically strenuous activities to cooler mornings or evenings.

Other mentions include jumping into cold water, using a fan or air conditioning, wearing a hat outdoors, taking a lukewarm shower, avoiding alcohol and consuming lukewarm drinks. One in ten people even work less or take vacation to avoid the heat.

This is the weather until the weekend
According to GeoSphere Austria, it will be cloudy this Thursday until the afternoon, after which the sun will appear more and more often. Temperatures in the afternoon are between 25 and 31 degrees. Outside of thunderstorms – in the western mountains and along the northern side of the Alps – the wind is blowing weakly.

Here you can see a message from the Austrian Severe Weather Center.

According to the Austrian Severe Weather Center, the chance of severe weather increases especially on Friday. In Vorarlberg it may rain in the morning, followed by heavy thunderstorms in the second half of the day, meteorologists said. In the west it cools down to 20 to 27 degrees, in the east temperatures up to 36 degrees are expected. More storms with heavy rain, hail and heavy showers are expected on Saturday night.
