It was intended as a spring walk – but five German hikers were not prepared for the fact that there was still plenty of snow in the Tyrolean mountains. The quintet wanted to go to the Großer Rettenstein near Kirchberg and got into trouble.
According to police, the five hikers were men between 21 and 22 years old, who were inexperienced in mountaineering. The Germans wanted to climb the Grote Rettenstein. The striking peak is located at an altitude of over 2,300 meters and is not a suitable hiking destination at this time of year.
Two of the men fell
The young men finally discovered that. She found herself increasingly in areas with a lot of snow. The hikers changed their destination and wanted to make their way to the so-called Spießnägel. However, they sank up to their knees in snow. To make matters worse, two of the men also fell down a steep slope. One injured his foot.
Group rescued with rope
Around 2:30 PM it was clear to the hikers that they could no longer continue. They made the emergency call. Mountain rescuers and an emergency helicopter crew responded and rescued the exhausted young men using rope from the helicopter.
