“Greenwashing” – climate conference: Coca-Cola as sponsor is angry

Date:

In the run-up to the 27th UN Climate Change Conference next month, a sponsorship agreement is causing a lot of commotion, namely the one with Coca-Cola. Environmental protection organizations are not giving the beverage company a good hair. It produces “120 billion disposable plastic bottles a year – 99 percent of the plastic is made from oil and gas,” says Greenpeace Austria.

The “Break Free From Plastic” initiative therefore spoke of “greenwashing in its purest form”. It is “amazing that a company so closely associated with the fossil fuel industry can sponsor such an important climate meeting”.

Coca-Cola: “Ready to do our part”
The company — as orf.at quoted from the “Guardian” — referred to its good intentions.
They share the goal of avoiding waste and appreciate “the efforts to raise awareness” on climate protection. In addition, Coca-Cola aims to support collective action against climate change through the partnership. “We are ready to do our part and have set ourselves ambitious goals for our business,” Coca-Cola told The Guardian.

Greenpeace: ‘Company must turn off plastic tap’
Greenpeace also demanded this: “If the company wants to be part of the solution in the future, it has to turn off the plastic tap. Switching to reusable and filling systems instead of disposable plastic is an important step in the fight against the climate crisis,” said consumer expert Lisa Panhuber.

The 27th UN Climate Change Conference will take place in Egypt from November 7-18. There, nearly 200 countries are discussing how to step up the fight against global warming. Time is of the essence as the past seven years have been the warmest since the weather records began.
