In the night of Wednesday, the preliminary estimate of the budget for Klagenfurt (Carinthia) was ultimately decided with a delay, but the financial concerns continued to exist. There are doubts about whether the austerity measures will be sufficient.
The members of the Klagenfurt city council discussed on Tuesday until late in the night until it was finally time around 11.30 am. Even if heated discussions on some agenda – items were to lead – the most urgent question was whether the state capital would finally bring together a budget for this year.
The mood then divided the city council. On the one hand, the mayor Party FSP and the Klagenfurter Spö, on the other FPö, Greens, Neos and Team Carinthia. According to the austerity measures, in which, despite the warnings from the experts, nor zero wage round in 2025, nor redemption of the loan from the indoor swimming pool, it was the budget in front.
“Reality and politically unfair”
“We not only started again, but also with the decision to take measures to start the development of the city in the right direction,” says Mayor Christian Scheider.
SP City Councilor Constance Mohar answered the criticism of Christoph Wutte, head of the financial department, immediately before the vote in the budget: “In this situation, to demand a positive budget in this situation, realistic and politically unfair.” Wutte had criticized new inner loans in particular with which projects must now be financed and financial gaps have to be concluded.
Despite all the exemption from the budget, the state capital still expects a negative center of funds of 48 million euros and possible insolvency, already in mid -2026, hangs on Klagenfurt like a sword of Damocles.
No voice about the budget
That is why there was always the question in the background whether municipal councils should be liable for a budget in the event of bankruptcy. The financial experts have warned about this themselves. That is why Neos -Baas Janos Juvan spoke shortly before the vote: “I would submit the application that we would vote by name to ensure that we have absolute clarity regarding the result or who then voted.” However, the Mandatars of FSP and Spö did not want to confess so strongly to the estimate and then prevented this.
