These are the Euro Cup tiebreaker criteria

Date:

The second day of European Cupare starting to make assumptions to get past this group stage and play in the round of 16. Stage where the two best from each group as well as the four best third parties access.

There are two possible scenarios when this first group stage ends next week. On the one hand, two or more teams are equal in their group. A tiebreaker will serve to determine not only the final order for the round of 16 matches or the following qualifying rounds; also to decide the four best third parties to advance to the round of 16.

To break the tie, UEFA regulations envisage up to seven possible options:

1.- Greater number of points obtained in the matches played between the teams involved.

2.- Greater goal difference obtained in the matches played between the teams involved.

3.- Greater number of goals scored in matches played between the teams involved.

If after applying these first three criteria, teams continue to keep all parameters the same; They are used again but in this case in matches between the remaining teams. If the tie still holds, UEFA will add three more tie-breaking criteria:

4.- Greater goal difference in all group matches;

5.- Maximum number of goals scored in all group matches

6.- Lower the total disciplinary points based only on yellow and red cards received by players and team officials in all group matches. Considering that a red card is 3 points, a yellow card is 1 point, Dismissal for two yellow cards in a match is 3 points.

7.- Position in the general classification of the European qualifying phase, or if Germany, the team of the host association, participates in the comparison, draw.

Rare situation of taking a penalty in the group stage

And there is the rare scenario where two teams with the same number of points and the same number of goals scored and conceded play their last group match against each other and are still tied at the end of said match. In this case, their final classification must be decided by shots from the penalty spot. This is given that no other team in the group has the same number of points at the end of all group matches.

Criteria for the four best third parties

But there are also criteria to decide the four best third parties of the six groups that will proceed to the round of 16. To decide this, UEFA has up to six criteria: maximum number of points; greater difference in purpose; highest number of goals scored or highest number of victories. The greater or lesser number of red cards received can also be key here. Fewer points are better for the choice in question. And where red card = 3 points, yellow card = 1 point, expulsion for two yellow cards in one match = 3 points. Finally the

position in the general classification of the European qualification stage, or if Germany, the team of the host association, participates in the comparison, draw.
