Grass, perhaps the most unpredictable surface, claimed another popular victim in Halle ATP (Germany), Stefanos Tsitsipasworld number 11, who fell to the German Jan-Lennard Struff (41st) by a double 6-4 in just 67 minutes and upset the interesting quarter-final match against the Italian Jannik Sinnerthe new no.
After losing in the Roland quarterfinals against Espanyol Carlos AlcarazTsitsipas has little experience in his first tournament on grass, a surface on which he has not particularly shone in his career although he won the title in Mallorca’2022.
The 25-year-old Greek has 21 wins and 16 losses on grass and his best result in Wimbledon They are the round of 16, a round they reached last year and in 2018. The third Grand Slam of the season will be played this season from July 1 to 14.
The loss against Struff was a relative surprise, because the German is an absolute ‘bomber’ and a dangerous tennis player when he is right, as he was: he made only five unforced errors (compared to Tsitsipas’ 17) and has connected on 22 hit winners (16 Greek). Struff did not have a single break point against him and, with one break in each set, was enough to win 6-4 6-4 and meet Sinner in the quarterfinals on Friday.
Last April, Struff won his first ATP title on the soil of Munich, where at the age of 33 years and 11 months he became the third oldest tennis player to debut his record, surpassed only by the Italian. Paolo Lorenzi (34 years and 7 months in Kitzbühel’2016) and the Dominican Victor Estrella Burgos (34 years and 6 months in Quito’2015).
Botic Van den Zandschulp, Felix Auger-Aliassime, Holger Rune and Taylor Fritz were the German’s victims in that historic title, which he won without losing a set. Especially notable was his loss to Rune, whom he ousted 6-2 and 6-0.
