The favorites showed the reasons for their condition in the 37 kilometers of the route through Iron Belt hills in Gamiz Fika. Fog, drizzle and mud accompanied the athletes on a leg-straining journey with 1,750 meters of elevation gain. 248 participants started the 37 kilometer trail; 405 on a 13 kilometer trail; and 295 on the 16 kilometer march. A great success despite the difficult conditions that exceeded the number of participants in 2023 by more than 50%.
The double Spanish ultra-trail champion, electronic engineer, university professor and researcher, Aritz Egea is the one that reaches the goal found in e firstFika’s height without even investing three hours. Egea recorded a time of 2:58.27, at a speed of 4.49 per kilometer. He was joined on the podium by the winner of the WMRA World Cup 2021, Raul Criado, who clocked 3:03:11; and, third, the Venezuelan Graf Sestao, Walter Becerrawith 3:05:22, nailing 5 minutes per kilometer.
The ultramarathon Zaid Ait Malekthe Skyrunner World Championship contender and winner of the 250 km Volcano UltraMarathon in Costa Rica, also occupied one of the top positions, with 3:09:25.
In the women’s category, the 2023 Spanish Trail Running champion and seventh in the Innsbruck world championship, Oihana Kortazar, reached the finish line in the lead with a time of 3:33:10, an average of 05:45 minutes per kilometer; while the winner of the Buff Epic Trail Sky Marathon or Trail Valle de Tena, Oihana Azkorbeitia, reached the finish line in second position, with 4:00.12; and Maria Arinwas bronze with a 4:41.00.
In the 13 kilometer trail they climbed to the men’s podium Mikel Rodríguez (1:04.30), Ekain Salazar (1:04.51) e Ibai Perez (1:06.16).
The women’s box was conquered by Ainara Urrutia (1:12.35), Sara Gutierrez (1:16.01) and Dear Jaio (1:25.15).
The feast day continues on Gamiz Fika. Eperlanda Kultur Elkarteathe local association that organizes the event, will allocate all funds raised to the humanization of the area of cancer and long-term diseases of pediatrics by OSI Cruces Hospital, in Barakaldo.
