The sprinter Elaine Thompson-Heraa five-time Olympic champion, will miss the Paris Games with an Achilles tendon injury.
The Jamaican athlete, 100m and 200m champion at Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020, he was injured on June 9 at the New York Grand Prix.
“It’s never fun to share news like this,” Thompson-Hera wrote on her Instagram account. “But in the Grand Prix I felt something in the race and I kept pushing, a few steps from the line I realized that something was not right,” said the text.
“I quickly went for a medical check-up and discovered that I had a small tear in my Achilles tendon. Remarkably, I went home with a strong mentality to continue pushing myself and prepare for my nationals path, another shot at my third Olympic Games, but my leg wouldn’t let me,” said Thompson-Hera, who will turn 32 on June 28.
“It’s a long road, but I’m ready to start again and continue working, fully recover and continue my track career,” said the athlete, who will turn 32 on June 28. “I’m hurt and sad to miss the Olympic Games this year, but in the end it’s sport and my health comes first,” he said.
Jamaican athletes have won Olympic 100m gold in the last four editions of the Games. Elaine Thompson-Hera is, with Usain Boltthe only athlete from that country to win multiple Olympic golds in the 100m and 200m.
