Anthony Gordon appeared today at a press conference. His face gave him away. The English striker faced the media with a large gash on his chin and scratches on his nose. It all boils down to an anecdote but the bike accident he suffered on Wednesday could have dire consequences for the Newcastle player.
“It was a beautiful day and I was down. I tried to take a quick video for my family and show them what I was doing. Then before I knew it, I was face down on the ground,” Gordon told reporters.
“I tried to press (the handbrake) to slow down, but it didn’t slow down, it stopped completely and I took off,” he continued.
The moral
A reporter laughed a little Gordon and gave him a neon green bicycle helmet and training wheels. “I think the moral of this story is that we probably spend too much time on our phones these days,” the striker said, laughing. “Just enjoy the moment instead of talking on the phone.”
The accident occurred in the morning after making his debut in the European Championship on Tuesday after playing in the last moments of England-Slovenia (0-0).
What should have been a pleasant ride on the electric bike ended up with a big cut on his chin, scratches on his nose, burns on his arms, cuts on his knuckles. Sequences more typical of a street fight.
Fortunately for Gordon, the accident was no worse and doesn’t stop him from having hope Gareth Southgate count on him on Sunday in the round of 16 tie against Slovakia.
Southgate’s reaction
What was Southgate’s reaction? “He laughed at first, like everyone else,” Gordon acknowledged. “It was kind of a joke. It wasn’t that serious, so everyone was laughing at me, because of my pain.”
Given Southgate’s wealth of attacking talent, Gordon only played the final seconds against Slovenia, prompting a campaign among Newcastle fans for the striker, who has scored 11 goals and provided 10 assists in 35 Premier League games League last season, get more time on the pitch.
What does it take to get into the team? “I’m not too sure, that’s up to the manager,” said Gordon. “I can only control what I can. I will do my best and make the selection as difficult as possible for him. If necessary, I will be more than ready.”
It didn’t explode
Gordon there was no question of putting pressure on Southgate. “No, I’m not like that,” he said. “If I train the best I can, I do the best I can every day, that’s my way of giving the coach a headache in terms of selection and the rest I can’t control.”
Voted the best player of the U-21 Euro Cup which he won in 2023 with England, Gordon believes he has a lot to offer England, has been criticized for its mediocre performances so far and ranked 20th in goal attempts in the group stage among the 24 participating teams.
“My strength is that I am direct and fast. I am a real nightmare for any opponent. I always try to put people on the defensive and I think I add another element to the team.” Southgate has the floor.
