“My situation has changed, my attitude has not changed”

Date:

Athletic waited until the end of League F to announce the renewal of Mariasun Quiñones. The Hondarribia goalkeeper, who was at a high level last Sunday in San Mamés against Sevilla, will continue in the red and white discipline for another season. The agreement reached with the Ibaigane entity also contemplates the possibility of extending the contract from June 30, 2025 for another year based on a series of objectives.

The 27-year-old red and white goalkeeper arrived in Lezama from Real in 2021. The signing of Adriana Nanclares prompted throughout the last season, among other things, that Quiñones had fewer minutes and less fame. After replacing the two earlier in the campaign, David Aznar chose the newcomer, also from Real, to serve as the starter.

Hondarriba’s goalkeeper numbers in this 2023-24 campaign are reduced to 11 games in the League and 2 games in the Cup, his total experience as a lion reaches, in this way, 67 official games.

Sun, as his teammates affectionately call him, made his Primera debut with Real a decade ago and has since become a full-fledged international. “I am very happy to be able to continue another year with my people in Lezama. My situation has changed this year, but my behavior is the same. My goal now is to play more games next season than this one,” he declared after his renewal on Athletic’s website.

Quiñones was also satisfied with her renewal: “The truth is that I am very happy, I am very happy that I was able to enjoy this family. In the end, we spent a lot of time together. We have breakfast, we eat, we train and there are times when we even study together.”

Union and ambition

Athletic’s goalkeeper understands that this time sharing is “synonymous with the fact that there is unity and in the team where there is unity we will always work better for good and for bad. This union, above all, is it will be important when luck is not smiling too much on us and we have to come together, work together and even have a bad face. The important thing is to be united, together and believe in the process,” he said in his statements on the Bilbao club’s own website.

Regarding the future of Athletic, Quiñones understands that “every year the level of competition increases and that is good. We also need to raise our level of demand if we want to be the highest. Our idea is to be in the top three and that is what we work for every day; But reality shows that staying in the top three is very difficult. We give our best every day, we hope to achieve this.”
