The flames are raging again on many Greek islands. Thassos, the northernmost island, is also affected, not far from the port city of Kavala. The styric hotel manager Korina Toulatzis was up close. “Fortunately, everything worked great this time.” The fire is now under control.
For days, the Greek authorities have warned the enormous risk of forest fire. Too little rain, too dry, enormous heat and strong wind have been to South Europe in recent days. These were apparently also the “ingredients” for the fire on Thassos. Around 11 p.m. it started to burn near the capital Limenas of the island.
“You don’t know why the fire broke out completely. It can’t be lightning because there was no thunderstorm,” says Korina Toulatzis. Born in Graz, she has been running the beautifully situated Kinira Beach Hotel in the east of the island for years. “No matter how stupid it sounds, we are now used to the forest fires. They are practically occurring every year.” Due to the wind, the fire spread quickly this time. The important road between Prino’s and Limenas had to be blocked.
Extra helpers came by ferry
Supported by many volunteers, the rescue workers, but this time responded quickly and well, such as Toulatzis, who noticed everything in their apartment in Limenas, says: “Two ferries came from Kavala at night and brought extra firefighters and vehicles to the island.” Two hotels had to be evacuated. The shocked tourists tried to leave the island in the middle of the night.
The hotel of the Styrian, which is located in the east of Thassos, was saved. “Everything was calm with us. The power failure, which paralyzed half of the island, had no influence on us.” Fortunately, the emergency services were able to quickly control fire on Thursday morning with a fire plane. Nobody was injured according to the current status.
