Milei’s government will not renew 5,000 government contracts and unions are mobilizing again

The CGT, the country’s main trade union, and the ATE, the largest union of public sector workers, will mobilize this Wednesday against the decree of necessity and urgency announced by President Milei last week.

He Government of Argentina will not renew about 5,000 government contracts next year and will review more than a million social plans to detect irregularities, as reported on Tuesday by the presidential spokesman, Manuel Adorni.

Adorni also announced that government contracts signed in 2023 and ending on December 31 will not be renewed in 2024, while the rest will undergo a 90-day review process.

During a press conference at Casa Rosada, the spokesperson specified that this measure will affect all temporary employees of the federal government and those of various public bodies in Argentina, and that only employees in state-owned enterprises and companies will be excluded.

As for social plans, the Argentine executive will begin the audit of more than a million social plans and predicts, based on calculations from judicial investigations, that 160,000 beneficiaries could receive this aid in an “irregular” manner.

Unions are mobilizing this Wednesday

The General Confederation of Labor (CGT) of Argentina, the country’s main union, and the State Workers Association (ATE)the largest union of public sector workers, will mobilize this Wednesday against the decision of necessity and urgency (DNU), announced last week by the President of Argentina, Javier Mileieliminating numerous laws and regulations to deregulate the economy and allow the privatization of public companies.

The public union has joined the mobilization that the CGT has been calling for since last Friday, after it was published in the Government Gazette that the government intends dismissed 7,000 public administration employees.

This has prompted them to call for “a new national day of struggle” in defense of government workers and against the attack “of such magnitude” on labor rights.

The main mobilization is planned in the city of Buenos Aires, while at the same time strikes and demonstrations will take place in the rest of Argentina’s provinces.
