Because of compulsory headscarf: – Big shock after attack on university in Iran

Date:

There is currently great dismay in Iran over a violent attack on a university. The reason is said to have been a dispute about the obligation to wear a headscarf at the educational institution.

A widely shared video shows how an employee of a renowned university insults and physically attacks a person in a stairwell. The first reports spoke of an assaulted student who had not complied with the headscarf requirement. It later emerged that a student had been attacked.

According to state media, the incident happened Monday at the well-known Allameh Tabatabai University in the capital Tehran. The person in the video has shoulder-length hair. According to a student organization, the attack was preceded by a dispute about the mandatory headscarf at the university. Accordingly, the alleged attacker was already known for cracking down on dress code violations in the past.

Relaxed dress code required
Since a wave of protests against the Islamic leadership broke out last fall, more and more women in Iran are defying the strict Islamic dress code. Schools and universities are no exception. The Iranian government has recently repeatedly announced stricter penalties for ignoring the dress code.

Iran’s ISNA news agency released a statement on Tuesday from the university’s board of directors, saying the incident is under investigation.

“Freedom Is in Our Thoughts”
The student body condemned the case. On her Telegram channel, she quoted students from Allameh Tabatabai University demanding more equality. “Freedom is in our minds and belief in victory is in our hearts,” the statement said. Iranians have been protesting online for days against the exclusion of female students from numerous faculties in the country for alleged violations of the headscarf requirement.
