An unprecedented initiative in world football. The Danish men’s team rejected a pay rise in favor of the salaries of its women’s team mates instead. This was announced, through the AFP agency, by the spokesperson for the Danish Football Federation, Magnus Hviid.
“The men’s team decided not to ask for a salary increase to improve the conditions of the women’s team,” Hviid said.
“This is an extraordinary step to help take a small step in the right direction,” the spokesperson added, admitting however that there are still “glass ceilings” that must be broken “to guarantee equal opportunities and conditions within the National teams”.
The agreement, signed at the end of May, provides for equal matching bonuses for both sides and “the health insurance coverage for women has been improved,” Hviid highlighted.
The framework of this decision coincides with the participation of the men’s team in the Euro Cup. According to the statements collected, both teams will receive the same financial bonuses for games played away from home. However, there are still differences in payments for matches played at home. As a result, the Danish Football Federation (DBU) has indicated that it will speed up negotiations for the signing of a new agreement in favor of the women’s team, which is scheduled for the return from vacation.
