The first day of Wimbledon left us with the victories of Carlos Alcaraz, Jannik Sinner, Daniil MedvedevCoco Gauff, Naomi Osaka and Emma Raducanu, but it also saw the farewell of seven of the tournament seeds.
Four men and three women said goodbye for the first time on a busy Monday that could not be completed due to a lack of light during the final games of the day.
In the men’s draw, Sebastián Báez (18) fell, swept by Brandon Nakashima (6-2, 6k-3, 6-4)Nico Jarry (19), who had many doubts after a month of not playing due to physical problems and succumbed to Denis Shapovalov (6-1, 7-5 and 6-4), Adrian Mannarino (22), who did not lose to Gael Monfils (6-4, 3-6, 7-5, 6-4) and Mariano Navone (31), who did nothing against Lorenzo Sonego (6-4, 7-6, 6-4).
In the women’s team came the most glaring defeat. Qinwen Zheng, world number 8 and finalist of the last Australian Openwas stunned by Australian Lulu Sun, world number 123, who overcame a first-set deficit to win 4-6, 6-2, 6-4.
The other two bones removed were Russian Mirra Andreeva (24)who lost the prodigy girls’ duel against Brenda Fruhvirtova (1-6, 6-3 and 6-2), and Sorana Cirstea (29)defeated by British Sonay Kartal (3-6, 6-2, 6-0).
