Langer thrilled his countrymen in his farewell European tournament debut

Date:

He left the morning shift, promptly, with a jersey and a large crowd lining the 10th tee, his first hole, and then every hole on the Munich course that hosts the BMW Openthe contest that serves as farewell to Touring Europe in the legend of golf and German sport Bernhard Langer, 66 years old. He hopes it’s Sunday, he said goodbye, and not this Friday with a cut.

You have to see, four months after injuring (and having surgery on) his Achilles heel, how the German performed. He signed two birdies, one bogey and all par, for a round under par of 71 strokes, top 50 five strokes behind the club-house leader, Australian David Michelozzi (66). Of the 78 golfers who came out to play in the morning session, only 27 had better results than Langer.

“The atmosphere has been amazing, it’s really been an incredible day, very exciting,” Langer said in the mixed zone. “At 7.40 in the morning there was not a soul on the tee, a lot of people, and I think for the public it became a very special and exciting day, of fun; it was a pleasure to play. with Marcel (Siem) and Martin (Kaymer)” (his party colleagues). I have known them for a long time, we have been together several times around the world, Siem won last week…, and I am proud that many young German players are now competing on the circuit. It took time but it was achieved and that fills me with pride and satisfaction,” added the successful 2004 Ryder Cup captain.

In a tweet, the Dane Thomas Bjornthe successful Ryder captain (2018) as Langer was in his time, wrote: “all my respect to a man who moved mountains for golfers around the world.”

Langer will be 67 years old in 23 days. Last week he played the US Senior Open at a course, Newport Country Club, just over 6,300 meters. He finished on Monday, crossed the lake and this Thursday he signed an under par Golfclub München Eichenrieda field of more than 6,700 meters

“I hit more 3-woods and 2-hybrids this round than the last two weeks combined. Certainly, this course doesn’t suit my game,” commented the German legend, smiling.
