The Dutch Dylan Groenewegen (Jayco Alula), winner of the sprint in Dijon, said he had an “incredible feeling” with his sixth Tour de France victory wearing the national champion’s jersey, which was also the first for his World Tour team.
“I’m so happy. The feeling is incredible, especially in this champion jersey from my country. I said it would be a good image, but I couldn’t celebrate it at the finish line. In the end, we did it and the team worked hard in the last few days. In the last kilometers, we stayed calm. “I don’t really know what happened, but I was first,” Groenewegen said.
The 31-year-old cyclist from Amsterdam had a very close battle with Kristoff’s Uno X and Philipsen’s Alpecin, and his victory was just a few centimetres.
“I like these sprints, side by side, I passed Philipsen right at the finish line. Yesterday I was very disappointed, it was also the first day, but that’s the sprint, sometimes the difference gets smaller. But today, we have a victory, the victory in the first week means a lot for me and for the team,” he said.
Groenewegen, with 5 wins this season, highlighted the “high level of sprinters in the Tour”, but is confident of “being able to win again”.
