An excited Langer said goodbye to the European Tour in style

Date:

On the 18th hole completely packed with people, on the tee, the entire fairway and of course the green, Bernhard Langer, the German legend of continental and world golfsay goodbye in style to European Tour (now DP World Tour) after losing the cut in BMW Open held in Munich and after 52 years of fruitful career.

Langer was delighted when, in the mixed zone, Sky Sports summed up his golf life in a few but definitive words. The German has never been so excited, as he missed the cut by three strokes after this Friday with a card of 73 for 144 (even), clearly not enough to continue the weekend. When he finished he needed eagle-3 on the 18th hole, he went for it but his second shot ended up in the water. Still, he saved par and received a standing ovation from the audience on their feet. The cut was established at 141 (-3) and only two Spaniards passed: Alfredo García Heredia and Manuel Elvira. Miguel Ángel Jiménez (-2) and Pablo Larrazábal (-1) were dismissed along with the rest of the Spaniards.

“It’s hard to put into words everything I’ve experienced in these years. I was born in a town with 800 inhabitants and of course people have no idea what golf is. I became a professional when I was 15 and not at least it was far. profession then, but this was my dream and I fulfilled it” (at this moment his voice broke with tears of emotion).

“I have great memories from all over the world: Europe, USA, Australia, South Africa, Asia… I talked and played with Kings and Queens, with very important people, my career has had some ups and downs but I have the honor to be part of the ‘Big Five’ of the European Tour along Sevvy, Faldo, Lyle and Woosie. Thanks to them we pushed and laid the foundations for this Tour that we have today. “Golf has given me everything,” summed up Langer, who has hardly been luxurious lately. He has lived in the US for a while (his wife is American) and has also had a good career on the Senior Tour.

German also spoke about Ryder Cup: “an honor to always represent the flag of Europe”, and then acknowledge that “this farewell is part of life, it is a cycle of life, but how many German pros are there today on the circuit competing and followed my path, then you didn’t see much and it makes me proud,” he concluded.
