The referee appointed by UEFA for the first semi-final match of European Cup next Tuesday in between Spain and France at the Munich Arena. The meeting will be chaired by the Slovenian Slavko Vinčić, who just whistled Spain in the group stage against Italy where the team won the minimum. He was also the referee of the last Champions League final between Borussia Dortmund and Real Madrid.
44 years old, he oddly shares the same nationality as the president of Europe’s highest football body, Alexander Ceferin. An international referee since 2010, he will direct his third match of this Euro Cup after directing Hungary-Switzerland and certainly Spain’s second match.
The Champions League final at Wembley was his second final in a UEFA club competition following his appointment as referee for the 2021 UEFA Europa League final between Eintracht Frankfurt and Rangers FC. That match was played at the Sánchez PIzjuán Stadium in Seville and was decided from the penalty spot.
He refereed seven matches this past season in the UEFA Champions League, including the quarter-final second leg between Borussia Dortmund and Atlético Madrid, which ended in a 4-2 German victory.
Of great memories for Spanish football
At the level of the national team, he is a referee who brings back great memories of Spanish football because a year ago he was in charge of calling the semi-final of the Nations League contested by Spain against Italy, a match that ended in a 2 -1 victory in the step before Luis de la Fuente’s team won the title.
This is the fifth time he has whistled against the Spanish team and so far he has not lost. In addition to the two victories, they tied the other two games.
