After 16 years in the peloton, the Dane Michael Morkov (Astana), considered the best pitcher in the world, for now confidant of record-holder Mark Cavendish, will leave professional cycling at the end of the season.
Morkov (Kokkedal, 39 years old), triple champion of Denmark and winner of a stage at Cáceres de la Vuelta 2013has been a key piece for the talented sprinters he’s worked with, among them Cavendish, who just broke the record of 34 stage wins in the Tour de France he shared with Eddy Merckx.
The Danish cyclist, who has 5 victories on his record, will compete in the Paris Olympic Games on the road and on the track.a, which would be the last great goal of his career. On the Olympic track, Morkov will defend the gold medal won at the Tokyo 2020 Games.
“Hello everyone, fellow cyclists, I would like to share with you that I have decided that this year 2024 will be my last year as a professional. Morkov said that even though he wasn’t “the best runner,” he was able to “work hard” and was able to achieve everything he set his mind to.
Morkov is currently competing in the Tour de France, not forgetting his goals until the end of the year.
“I’m enjoying this Tour de France a lot more than any other because I’m really trying to soak it all in. The experience with Mark Cavendish makes me enjoy this season.
