Argentina took a giant step towards reaching the Copa América final thanks to a goal from Leo Messi at the start of the second half. The Rosario star deflected a shot slightly with his left foot to deflect the Canadian goalkeeper and make the score 2-0.
The albiceleste players initially did not celebrate the goal because Messi seemed to be in an offside position. However, the replay showed that central defender Cornelius was ‘hooked’ and that proved Messi’s goal, his first in this edition of the Copa América.
The goal came in the 51st minute and left Argentina close to the grand final. Midway through the first half it was Julián Álvarez who opened the scoring with a pass from Rodrigo de Paul.
