Dokic, born in Croatia but of Australian nationality, he met with Wimbledon 1999 when at the age of 16 he was beaten Martina Hinggis in the first round and reached the quarterfinals of the tournament. The former player has won four WTA titles, played in the Wimbledon semifinals and advanced to the quarterfinals at Roland Garros and Australia.
In 2017, three years after his retirement, he explained the problems he had experienced in his career, including the physical and mental abuse he had to face from his father.
“I almost jumped from the 26th floor of my house and took my own life,” Dokic said in a social media post. “I will never forget that day. It was all dark. It was meaningless. Only tears, sadness, depression, anxiety and pain were there. The last six months were very hard. I kept crying. I was crying in the bathroom at work when secretly and wiping my tears so no one could see me.
“I blame myself. I don’t think I deserve to be loved and I’m scared,” added the former player.
The Australian, who has since retired has consolidated jobs as a television commentator, confirmed he is receiving medical help.
“It’s not easy to write, but I’ve always been open, honest and vulnerable. I strongly believe in the power of sharing our stories to help others. I write this because I know I’m not the only one suffering,” Dokic admits. .
