The Gibraltar Football Association lodged a formal complaint with UEFA on Thursday after Spanish players chanted “Gibraltar is Spanish” during the celebration of the Eurocup earlier this week.
Spain celebrated victory in Madrid after beating England 2-1 in the Euro Cup final, where the oldest players, including Captain Alvaro Morata and the midfielder Manchester City Rodri, They shouted “Gibraltar is Spanish.”
Gibraltar is a British overseas territory. When Morata reminded Rodri playing for an English club, the player of the tournament replied: “I don’t care.” The Gibraltar Football Association said the video was met with “anger, frustration and disappointment”.
“The the behavior in question is deeply offensive for Gibraltarians, who have repeatedly exercised their democratic rights to remain a British Overseas Territory”, said the Gibraltar Football Association.
“Although Gibraltar borders Spain, and values its close association with Spain and the Spanish people, it is and remains a British Overseas Territory.”
“The conduct is also deeply offensive to the Gibraltar FA as it suggests that we should not exist as an independent UEFA national member association.”
The Gibraltar federation added to that the chants were “extremely provocative and insulting in nature”, adding that the players’ behavior was “illegal” and breached UEFA’s disciplinary regulations.
