In Aurach near Kitzbühel, three dead cattle were found on Tuesday – they had crashed. A wolf was probably the culprit, as was revealed on Wednesday after an examination by the local veterinarian.
Despite a ruling by the European Court of Justice (ECJ) on the protection of wolves in Austria, the black-red Tyrolean state government on Thursday again gave permission to shoot a predator. The reason: three dead cattle (crashed) were found on Tuesday in an alpine pasture in the municipality of Aurach near Kitzbühel. At least two other cattle were injured. After examination by an official veterinarian, it was suspected that wolves were involved.
Shooting regulations for eight weeks
The now issued shooting order for a harmful wolf went into effect Thursday and was valid for a period of eight weeks within a radius of ten kilometers from the location of the event. According to the state, the hunting community has already been notified.
The Court of Justice ruled last week that the ban on wolf hunting in Austria remains in force. The starting point of the procedure was a complaint by animal welfare organizations after the Tyrolean state government approved a wolf for shooting in 2022.
Five wolves have been shot so far
In Tyrol, however, there was “no immediate impact” and the state government stressed that problem wolves would still be shot. The shooting regulations have proven themselves, “and we will continue consistently on this path,” said the responsible deputy governor and agricultural councillor Josef Geisler (ÖVP).
