A German had a breakdown in the Gutenstein Alps in Lower Austria. The paraglider encountered turbulence as it approached landing and fell into the depths. The 31-year-old’s paraglider became entangled in the top of a tree. That probably saved his life…
The incident took place on Saturday around 4:30 PM above the Muckenkogel. As the mountain rescue service in Lower Austria/Vienna reports, the German probably ended up in an air pocket near the landing site – he quickly lost altitude. Before the man hit the ground at high speed, his paraglider got stuck in a treetop. From there he could call the emergency number himself.
Mountain rescuer Jürgen Schwarz, a specialist in tree rescue, immediately went to the victim, secured with crampons and safety ropes. The mountain rescue team, consisting of seven rescuers, then lowered the pilot from the treetop to the ground via a cable car strung with a ground anchor.
Paraglider recovered virtually unscathed
“In most cases, paragliding accidents are associated with serious injuries. We are therefore pleased that we were able to quickly complete this technically very demanding operation and that the young man is doing well. Thank you to the volunteer mountain rescuers for their willingness to help!”, said Thomas Bichelhuber, head of the Lilienfeld mountain rescue service.
