The Belgian Remco Evenepoel (Soudal Quick Step), third overall in the Tour de France, once again acknowledged the superiority of leader Tadej Pogacar and declared the alpine day good by “securing the podium”.
“Pogacar dominated everyone again. When he started to speed up he put everything to the limit and he didn’t attack yet. Then I couldn’t follow him anymore and I put my own gear, and as I saw that it was almost the same as Vingegaard, I waited for him to ride. I lack a little cooperation. I tried my luck to see if I could buy time, but it didn’t work” commented Remco at the finish line.
Evenepoel, winner of the Vuelta and world champion in 2023, gained time on the fourth-placed finisher, Portuguese Joao Almeida, virtually guaranteeing his place on the podium.
“For me, it was another good day, I increased my advantage over Almeida and we can say that my podium is for sure. Above all, I have behaved well in this difficult phase where we have reached a very high level. It was an important moment in my career, I assured myself about my abilities. “Now I know which direction I want to go, I know I still have a way to go,” he highlighted.
Remco just hopes not to make any big mistakes in this Saturday’s stage and will try to win the time trial on Sunday.
“Tomorrow we have to stay focused, don’t make stupid mistakes that could cost me time, I’ll just compete for my podium. And on Sunday I will give everything to win the stage,” he concluded.
