The Slovenian Tadej Pogacar denied that he was looking for revenge on the Dane Jonas Vingegaard, who beat him in the last two editions of Tour de France.
“I’m not looking for revenge.. But it’s true that I came second in the last two Tours and it motivated me to come back stronger and show that I can win the Tour again, that my first two wins were not a fluke,” said the UAE rider after reaching the top of the Isola 2,000 was his fourth stage victory on this Tour.
The Slovenian, who leads Dane Jonas Vingegaard by 5.03 minutes, assured that the lead is “comfortable” and gives him “confidence to face the final two stages”.
Pogacar asserted that Vingegaard’s Visma tactics, which sent two men forward from the first climb, led him to think they were preparing a Dane attack, but they quickly realized they were looking for a breakthrough on stage.
“My teammates kept the differences and I think we prepared my attack well”said.
“Knowing the terrain helped me, I didn’t know if I could take 3 minutes from Jorgenson, but I think Matteo left early and it paid off at the end. I knew every slope and every flat kilometers,” he said.
The Slovenian reckons that this Saturday it will be easier for breakaways to form, but he is not abandoning the pursuit of his 16th Tour victory. “Depends if Marc Soler tells us to speed up,” he joked.
“I’m not releasing anything, I have to take advantage of the fact that I know these ports well”said.
