Sainz: “I don’t think Hamilton is better than me; I think I’m the best choice for any team”

Date:

The future of Carlos Sainzstill in the air. In fact, many pilots have said this: until the Madrid native chooses a destination, the market is relatively stagnant. The Spanish driver wants to find the best project to become champion one day, a goal he had when he signed Ferrari four years ago today.

In an interview for the fashion magazine GQ, he explained what it felt like after a few months to see how Lewis Hamilton he remained seated. When asked if he felt he was a worse driver than the Briton, Sainz reiterated the importance in F1 of believing that nobody is better than yourself. A strong mentality to survive in the jungle that is the ‘Great Circus’.

“I sincerely believe not, obviously not. Just like if you ask this question to the 18 other drivers they will answer the same thing.”. I believe I am the best option for any Formula 1 team because if I didn’t have this mentality I wouldn’t be a Formula 1 driver. and I wouldn’t have the competitive soul that I have. And other pilots will answer you the same way.”

“That said, I clearly understand Ferrari’s decision, the opportunity to sign a seven-time world champion and what it might entail and attract a team. So, when I look at it closely, I’m not that offended .Because in the end, you are not replaced by another pilot, but the best pilot in history will replace youyear of the best drivers in the history of this sport. And in the end, if I have to be replaced by one, let that one be,” commented the Spaniard.

The appreciation you deserve

Sainz is a driver who keeps his mouth shut wherever he goes. Coming to F1, he battled with Max Verstappen and was very close. Later, he led the McLaren project and when he signed for Ferrari, far from being Leclerc’s squire as some have pointed out, he became one of the leaders of the current grid.

Carlos knows that people who know him appreciate him. There is no better compliment than that coming from your professional colleagues. For some reason, this is the pilot market with the most options on the table. However, he admitted that perhaps there were critical voices who gave their opinion without really seeing what he had achieved.

“I wholeheartedly believe that not by people who know this sport well (about whether it is undervalued). Because of the team leaders, the drivers or the people who are deeply involved in the daily life of this sport, I have never felt undervalued. Not even for engineers, the people who follow the specifications. Maybe because of the media or because of people who don’t understand or follow this sport a little superficially. and he didn’t go into detail, possibly sometimes he ignores me or I am undervalued. But as I always say, the ones who are important to me are the ones who really understand this sport, and in that sense I never felt that I was not appreciated by my rivals, by the engineers and by the team leaders, ” he says.
