Jannik Sinner22 years old and world No. 1, has announced his departure from Games in Paris due to tonsillitis and thus shook up the Olympic tennis tournament before the draw this Thursday.
To begin with, the absence of Italian indicates that Carlos Alcaraz will be second favorite instead of third and, therefore, will not face Novak Djokovic, new number 1 seed, to a hypothetical final. With Sinner and Djokovic in the draw, the Murcian could face one or the other in a semifinal if they all fulfill the predictions of the leading candidates for gold.
“I am sad to report that unfortunately I will not be able to participate in Olympic Games in Paris. After a good week of dirt training, I started to feel sick. I rested for a few days and during a visit the doctor diagnosed me with tonsillitis and strongly recommended that I not play,” explained the Italian on his social networks.
“Missing the Games is a huge disappointment, as this is one of my main goals for this season. I can’t wait to have the honor of representing my country at this important event. Good luck to all Italian athlete, who I will support from home. Forza Italia!” added Jannik.
