Andy Murray has given up playing singles at the Paris Games

Date:

Andy Murray announced this Thursday that he will not compete in the individual event at the Paris Games and he will prioritize the doubles event in the last tournament of his career before retirement.

The two-time Olympic gold medalist skipped the singles event in her final appearance at Wimbledon this month after undergoing surgery to remove a spinal cyst in late June, but has signed up for the singles and doubles first, with Dan Evans, in Paris.

However, the 37-year-old tennis player decided to give up the singles before the draw was made.

I decided to retire from singles to focus on doubles with Dan. Our training sessions went well and we played well together. “I’m really looking forward to getting started and representing Great Britain again,” he said in a statement.

Murray won singles gold at London 2012, defeating Roger Federer in the final, and successfully defended his title in Rio four years later by defeating Juan Martín del Potro.

He also had silver in mixed doubles in London with Laura Robson.

The three-time Grand Slam winner said on Tuesday that he will retire after the Paris Games, with the tennis tournament running from July 27 to August 4 at Roland Garros.

Murray, who revived his career after undergoing hip resurfacing surgery in 2019, told British media on Wednesday that it was time to retire.
