Israeli soldiers have recovered the bodies of five Hamas hostages in the Gaza Strip. These included the remains of soldiers and civilians who had already been killed in the Palestinian terrorist organization’s devastating attack on October 7 of the previous year.
The bodies of Maya Gorens and soldiers Ravid Katz, Oren Goldin, Tomer Ahimas and Kiril Brodski have been returned to Israel, the army said Thursday. Their bodies were found Wednesday during an operation in Khan Younis. Two kibbutzim had already announced Wednesday that the bodies of two hostages had been brought from the Gaza Strip to Israel.
Maya Goren was brought home for burial after more than nine months, Kibbutz Nir Oz said. In a separate statement, Kibbutz Nir Yitzhak announced the repatriation of Oren Goldin’s body by the military.
The Israeli military informed Maya Goren’s family of her death in early December, saying her body was being held in the Gaza Strip. Her husband, Avner Goren, was also killed in the major Hamas attack on the kibbutz on October 7. From Nir Oz alone, armed Palestinians have taken more than 72 of the 400 residents hostage.
US: Negotiations with Hamas “in final stages”
According to reports, there are still around 120 hostages in the hands of Hamas – although there are also likely to be some deaths. The US administration sees the negotiations for the release of the hostages in the “final phase”. “It is time to come to an agreement,” a senior US administration official said on Wednesday. There is progress in the negotiations and it is assumed that the differences can be bridged.
