Vandals attacked France’s TGV high-speed train network on Friday in a series of coordinated actions that caused major disruption on some of the country’s busiest train lines ahead of the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympic Games.
The state rail operator said alleged assailants had attacked facilities on lines linking Paris to the west, north and east of the country and would disrupt traffic over the weekend. Initial estimates indicate that the disruptions will affect around 800,000 passengers.
“Last night, the SNCF was the victim of several acts of vandalism on the Atlantic, northern and eastern high-speed lines. The fires were deliberately set to destroy our facilities,” SNCF said in a statement.
Amélie Oudéa-Castéra, the Minister of Sports, condemned the acts of vandalism.
“It’s totally atrocious,” he told BFMTV. “An attack on the Games is an attack on France.”
