Denia: “Being classified after the second game is the first goal”

Date:

Santi Denia, Spanish Olympic football coach, assured that, before starting Paris 2024, the first “objective” they set is to “classify after the second match”, as they achieved this Saturday by defeating the Dominican Republic 1 -3.

“Before the Games start, being classified after the second game is the first goal and the most important thing. As always, knowing that we have to improve if we want to go further,” he said in the mixed zone.

The Spanish coach spoke about the condition of Marc Pubill, who did not play due to overload. “Marc had discomfort. This is a tournament played at three o’clock in the afternoon, humidity, heat… Certainly more people are uncomfortable and we are trying to recover them all. We hope that they will be mild and recover, ” he declared.

And he hinted that there will be rotations for the final group stage match due to the players’ load of minutes. “We want to be first. In this tournament it is important. But you see that there is discomfort, fatigue…”, he assessed.

A Santi Denia criticized that with two yellow cards a player is allowed for the next match, as will happen to Pau Cubarsí. “Before the tournament we talked to FIFA and we told them that the two cards are an aspect that should be improved, because in a short tournament it is very complicated,” he said.

Finally, he would like to congratulate the Spanish Ibai Gómez, Dominican coach, for his approach to the match. “I have to congratulate Ibai. The system has changed for us, even though we saw all his games, where he played with a different structure. He is doing a great job, Ibai and his coaching staff,” he commented.
