Spanish canoeist Maialen Chourraut said on Sunday, after finishing twelfth in the K1 final at Paris 2024, that these are certainly his “last games” but that he lives “very much in the present”.
“This may be my last Games, but I live in the fact that I am in this competition, I live in the present,” said the triple Olympic medalist.
Chourraut added that this will almost certainly be his “last Olympic descent doing slalom,” but not his “last minute paddling a K1 canoe.”
The 41-year-old athlete spoke about the early mistake that left him with no options for the podium, “door two” which he stressed he “crossed.”
“I don’t know if you noticed, but in the first race, second, semifinal and final I haven’t been able to do well in any of the descents,” he added.
The Basque admitted that he also did not succeed in training and that they “worked as much as possible on the possible trajectories”, but while the others were good, he was not.
“I feel lucky to have all the support, to have so many fans here, to feel all the heat all these years and finally I’m privileged to live this experience,” he said despite of his disappointment.
Chourraut also mentioned that he still has kayak cross ahead of him at these Games and that “now it’s time to rest a little and study the training videos and get the plastic canoe.”
