Jon Rahmwho was left without a medal in the men’s golf tournament at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, despite leading by four strokes, announced on Sunday that “It was a very painful ending.”
“I am disappointed; this ending is very painful, and it bothers me even more because of all the support received from Spain on and off the field. I want to give them that joy, but I can’t,” said a sad Jon Rahm in remarks given by the Royal Spanish Golf Federation.
Although he was the outstanding leader midway through the final round, the Biscayan said he never saw the medal as “done.” “With how well he had played, to think about not having any options at the end… It’s hard to think about it, honestly,” he acknowledged.
Rahm believes the key is not in the bogeys on 11 and 12, but in the double bogey on 14: “The problem is more with the third shot on that hole. There are things that cannot be done in this field. I cost two hits. If I make par there I have a chance to hit the last holes well, but…”.
He admitted he had a mental disconnection after that 14th hole, and that carried over to the 15th, settling for par, and even the 16th, with a birdie. Jon Rahm added that “you learn from everything,” but noted that recovering from what happened at Le Golf National will cost him “a lot more” than other occasions. Thinking about Los Angeles 2028, Rahm said thatand “much remains to be done until then.”
Fellow Olympian David Puig said that “I had to be aggressive from the first hole, and it punished me”. The Barcelona golfer said his approach was “to try to get as high as I can, and to do this we have to be aggressive.”
Puig admitted to being “disappointed”, but that didn’t stop him from highlighting his experience in Paris. “I want to repeat in four years. Representing Spain is an honor and I hope to have the option to return,” he stressed.
“Being here is an honor. There’s a lot of work behind it to get here. I would have liked to have done better, but the fact to be here and share it with Jon is an honor,” Puig said.
