After the bizarre Viennese social security cases became public, the state governors are now making clear demands. The current social security regulations must be urgently questioned, say Christopher Drexler and Markus Wallner (both ÖVP).
This cannot continue! Vorarlberg Governor Markus Wallner (ÖVP) is making clear demands in the debate about bizarre excesses in social security. New, much stricter rules must be introduced – and they must also apply uniformly nationwide.
4,600 euros in social assistance for a family of nine from Syria, even 5,000 for a family of ten. These recently reported cases from Vienna led to a heated debate.

Vienna faces strong criticism from federal states
While Peter Hacker, social councillor of the SPÖ, passionately defends Vienna’s generosity, there is heavy criticism from the states. Governor Markus Wallner (ÖVP) puts it sharply: “This stoic non-reaction from Vienna is unbearable.”
Because the world has become a different place since the great wave of refugees in 2015. Wallner: “We cannot pretend that nothing has changed.” However, people have “put a blanket over the issue of social assistance” and do not want to talk about it. “But that is no longer possible, other paths must be taken,” the Vorarlberger demands.
Permanent assistance only in absolutely exceptional cases
What does he mean? First of all – as proposed by Chancellor Nehammer (ÖVP) – social assistance should not be paid “from day one”. It should be phased out after six months. The benefits should always be linked to the willingness to learn our language and the qualifications. “It must be clear that someone is trying to integrate into the labour market.” Permanent assistance should only be available in very exceptional cases – if someone is not fit for work.
It is certainly not acceptable to pay the same amount for every child, even in the largest families. Wallner: “Of course, you have to see a family as a family community.”
Condition for future coalition negotiations?
When should all this be implemented? The state governor of Vorarlberg would like to see an initiative in this regard from the outgoing government. If that does not work, then that is a condition for the next government negotiations.
Wallner’s colleague Christopher Drexler (also ÖVP) also demands this. The governor of Styria also demands that “we have to question these systems as a whole”. This must happen urgently in the government negotiations after the elections.
