“There are many women with high testosterone levels,” an IOC spokesman recalled Friday. Mark Adamsat the end of the controversy opened by the Algerian boxer’s participation in the Paris Games Imane Khelifwho was disqualified from the Boxing World Cups in 2023 because of that emotion.
“Scientifically, no one says that men fight with women,” he stressed. Adamswho highlighted that Khelif’s case “is not a case of a transgender athlete, although there has been some confusion.”
The eligibility criteria for IOC and for most sports it is, he says, “the identity card.”
“If the passport says you are a woman, you compete as a woman,” Adams said, stressing at a press conference that the Algerian boxer “was born a woman, was registered as a woman, grew up as a woman and competed as a woman.”
The spokesperson indicated that if all the suspicions that have arisen around the sexual identity of athletes are heeded, we will return to the days when “nobody wanted” femininity tests.
Adams indicated that “the IOC always strives to strike a balance between inclusivity and justice” and the safety of athletes is their “number one concern”, which is why boxers involved in controversy receive psychological help, as well as their environment.
The Italian Angela Carini withdrew from his round of 16 against Imane Khelif in 46 seconds, because he understood that he was competing in inferior conditions.
Also in the same case is Taiwanese Lin Yu-ting, who was not approved by the boxing federation but admitted by the IOC, an organization that also withdrew recognition from the boxing body due to irregularities.
The next fight of the Algerian boxer is this Saturday against Hungarian Anna Luca Hamori, in the quarterfinals.
