Sebastian Korda was crowned champion of the Washington tournament this Sunday. The American defeated Flavio Cobolli 4-6, 6-2, 6-0 in the grand final and followed in the footsteps of his father Petr Korda, who won the tournament 32 years ago.
“I came to this tournament since I was a teenager. My father trained Radek Stepanek, who also won here in 2011“said the American Korda, who is now coached by Stepanek.
“We have a lot of history in this tournament. One of my biggest goals is to come here one day and hopefully win the tournament and put my name up there in the stadium. This is probably the most special moment of my career so far“.
Success also ensured that Korda became first American to win the crown in Washington since Andy Roddick in 2007as he prepares for the US Open which starts on August 26.
Korda is among a group of American men seeking to end the country’s 21-year Grand Slam drought since Roddick won his home Grand Slam, and said there is a “healthy jealousy” among them.
“When someone gets a good result, others want to get a better result,” said Korda, who reached a career-high world number 18 on Monday.
“It’s really great to have all the Americans around. All the Americans are playing great tennis right now. Hopefully we can make a big push at the next Grand Slams soon” he concluded.
