Time and again turtles are exposed to Carinthia because owners are extremely overwhelmed. Some species can even endanger the environment. Now an expert speaks.
Not for the first time, reptile expert Helga Happ was called up for an exposed turtle. “I only had to move to Brenndorf in St. Kanzian on Thursday,” says the boss of the Klagenfurt Reptilezoos. An older lady worried Happ because she came across a large turtle.
This is the American yellow turtle that can be up to 75 years old. “She eats everything that comes on her way, a fish and carnivore frogs, toads, amateur eggs, salamander are her prey. Her enemy- the alligator- but only lives in America.”
Animals are exposed
The private attitude is forbidden from us. Nevertheless, it always happens that people buy these animals. “When buying, they are small and delicious, but as soon as they get bigger, the owners are overwhelmed because they suddenly no longer fit into the aquarium because of their size – the tank is a maximum of 35 centimeters long,” Happ shakes the head. “A good 100 of these toads are in me in the zoo. They continue to appear from the lakes of Carinthia – especially to Lake Wörthersee.”
Currently also at the Castle Pound in Viktring. “We have been trying to catch the animal there for a long time – but without success.”
