The City Football Group (CFG)a group that owns a dozen clubs, including City of Manchester, wants to control Palermo, which has just been promoted to Serie B (Italian Second Division), according to various media in the transalpine country. According to Gazzetta dello Sport, “negotiations for the sale of Palermo to City Football Group are progressing rapidly”. Meanwhile, the Sky Sport channel believes that “the transaction may close in the coming days.”
Dario Mirri, president of Palermo, could retain a minority stake in the Sicilian club. This businessman was part of a group of investors who took over Palermo in 2019 after it went bankrupt and was relegated to the Fourth Division, at the amateur level. Asked about the possible sale to the City by the AFP agency, the Italian club did not comment.
Palermo, a club that played in Serie A until 2017 and where JJavier Pastore, Edinson Cavani and Paulo Dybalawas promoted to Series C (Third) in 2020. And only now has it been promoted to Series B after beating Padova.
The CFG, an Emirati fund, already has total or partial control over eleven clubs, including Manchester City, its flagship, but also Girona, Troyes in France, Lommel in Belgium, New York City FC in the United States, Melbourne City in Australia, Yokohama Marinos in Japan or Sichuan Jiuniu in China.
