The Brazilian winger Douglas Costa signed a two-year contract to play in Australia with Sydney FCthe A-League club announced on Monday. The signing of the 33-year-old, who won three Serie A titles with Juventus Turin, where he played alongside Cristiano Ronaldo, is a coup for his new club ahead of the start of the Australian season in October.
“I have been part of some incredible teams throughout my career, won many titles and come to Sydney FC to win more,” Costa said in a statement. “Football is in my blood and I am coming to Australia to grow the game in this country, entertain the sports loving public and bring trophies to Sydney FC,” he stressed.
He arrived on a free from Fluminense
The Gremio Porto Alegre-trained player arrived in Sydney after being released by Brazilian club Fluminense. He has won 24 trophies in his career, including the 2020 Club World Cup with Bayern Munich. Costa won five consecutive Ukrainian league titles with Shakhtar Donetsk before joining Bayern in 2015, helping them win three German championships. He was then signed by Juventus in 2017, initially on loan, and played for the Italian giants until 2022, with several loan spells.
Costa has 31 caps for Brazil and was part of the squad that competed at the 2018 World Cup in Russia Last season, Sydney FC finished fourth in the 12-team A-League, behind defending champions Central Coast Mariners.
