The coach of Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), Luis Enrique Martínezsaid Saturday that there was “no doubt” that he wanted to continue leading the Paris team, but made it clear that there were more parties involved than him and that “the future will tell.” “There is no doubt that I would love to continue, but there are more parts than one and will be told in the future,” said the Spanish coach, in a press conference ahead of the league clash that PSG will play on Sunday at home against Lille.
Luis Enrique, 54, has refused to think about his future in the past, even assuring that it is an issue that is of little interest to him, but this Saturday it was clear that he was in favor of continuing, although without taking anything for granted. “My future is like yours, today and thank you,” he answered the journalist who asked him about his renewal despite the two seasons he signed in 2023.
He explained, however, that he sees himself “immersed” in the project with PSG, that it is tailored to him and that it is “perfect” for him. “I have adapted from day one,” he added about his level of satisfaction with the Paris experience. He answered something similar about the possible renewal this year of PSG’s current sporting director, the Portuguese Luís Campos, in which he emphasized his good working relationship.
Aside from questions about the future, a good part of the press conference discussed the recent draw of rivals for the Champions League and its new competition format. Luis Enrique, as did the president of the club, the Qatari Nasser Al-Khelaïfi, on Thursday, considered that PSG is the team with the most difficult draw. “It was a competition to experience, but it was clear we were under-favoured in the draw,” he reflected.
Regarding the format, he said that right now there are too many “variables” that are unknown, so he refuses to make value judgments. And about tomorrow’s visit to Lille, Luis Enrique explained that it will definitely be a match at the level of the Champions League, with a high level, and he really likes the approach of Bruno Génésio’s team.
