Swiss Luigi Taveri will be the new MotoGP Legend in Austria

Three -time Swiss world champion Luigi Taveri will be named MotoGP Legend in 2022 and, although deceased, will be inducted into the MotoGP Legends Hall of Fame at the Austrian Grand Prix at the Red Bull Ring circuit in Austria.

Taveri was born in the canton of Zurich in 1929 and made his Grand Prix debut in 1954 in the 250 cc and 500 cc categories. The following season he competed in the 125 cc and 250 cc, and became runner-up in the 125 cc world championship in 1955, achieving his first victory in the first race of the year.

In 1962, he won his first World Championship, crowned himself in the 125 cc class, and went on to win another two championships in 1964 and 1966, to secure his place in motorcycling history.

Between his debut in 1954 and his retirement at the end of 1966, the Swiss rider competed in the 50cc, 125cc, 250cc, 350cc and 500cc classes, earning victories in the 50cc, 125cc and 250cc, and finishing in podium in the 350cc category making him one of the few riders to score Grand Prix points in the 50cc, 125cc, 250cc, 350cc and 500cc categories

Taveri will now be called the MotoGP Legend, joining a long list of greats that include Valentino Rossi, Giacomo Agostini, Mick Doohan, Geoff Duke, Wayne Gardner, Mike Hailwood, Daijiro Kato, Eddie Lawson, Anton Mang, Ángel Nieto, Wayne Rainey , Phil Read, Jim Redman, Kenny Roberts, Kenny Roberts Jr, Jarno Saarinen, Kevin Schwantz, Barry Sheene, Marco Simoncelli, Freddie Spencer, Casey Stoner, John Surtees, Carlo Ubbiali, Alex Crivillé, Franco Uncini, Marco Lucchinelli, Randy Mamola, Kork Ballington, Dani Pedrosa, Stefan Dörflinger, Jorge ‘Aspar’ Martínez, Jorge Lorenzo, Max Biaggi and the late Nicky Hayden. New Zealander Hugh Andersson’s ceremony is pending for the next Australian GP in October.
