The Australian Ben O’Connor (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale) commented at the end of this Thursday’s episode of 79th edition of the Vuelta, where he maintained the lead, which he expected to “stay in the red” for several days, even though he barely had a 5-second advantage over Primoz Roglic.
“I feel good, the stage is calm now and I’m still wearing red. I will continue to defend it as long as I can and I hope to keep it for a few more days,” he said.
The oceanic racer, in any case, admits that, whatever happens, this Vuelta will be “a milestone” and a race that is “very special” for him. “I’m sure this Vuelta will be a milestone in my career. Having the red for so many days is being very special. I hope to fight for it again in the future and this race is already very special for me,” he highlighted .
Although he already sees himself as having a “small chance” of winning the Vuelta in Madrid, O’Connor isn’t ruling it out because “you never know what’s going to happen.”
The Australian announced that he will participate in the online race and the mixed relay of Cycling World Cups which will be held from September 21 to 29 in Zurich (Switzerland), but he doesn’t want to think about them now instead “continue to focus on the Vuelta.”
