Making history is usually not easy at a century-old club that can boast of always competing in the First Division with a unique philosophy. Two Athletic players, bearing the ‘made in Lezama’ seal, appear on the nominees lists for the Ballon d’Or and the Yashin Trophy for the current year. Nico Williams and Unai Simón, forward and goalkeeper respectively, raised the red and white pride to the highest power.
SASome are always incapable of understanding what Athletic is and what it means to people. They, who are used to often winning titles individually and collectively, will never assimilate that the important thing is to participate and if it is yours, so much the better. Without giving up on competing and being aware that some victories are more than adding three points or passing a round.
RIt was great to see the names of Athletic wingers and goalkeepers included in the lists of famous and unknown nominees. Training in Lezama and playing in San Mamés also attracts attention at the local, national and international levels.
RKnowing, appreciating and competing with the elite from home is priceless. It is true, of course, that for some professionals yes. Others, however, were happy and made a career always defending the colors of Athletic.
THOUGHI hope the example is set in Lezama and nearby areas. Nico has yet to hear siren songs this summer. Unai is deaf to these levels. Congratulations to both of them and the club itself. Harro!
